Youth Services

The After School Achievers have been very busy this year, here are some highlights:

Trip to Houston’s Martin Luther King Memorial at MacGregor Park Children from the After School Achievers Program and the YET Center at Finnigan Park travelled to the Memorial on January 24 for a scavenger hunt and shared recreation time at the beautiful playground there.  Shirley and Emily won first place in the scavenger hunt by completing 12 Historical facts about Dr. King’s life that can be found on the timeline at the memorial.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2017 Knowledge Bowl

(l to r) Trevion, NaKyla, Leah, Morgan, Bre’Anna, Aniya, Alaia, A’khylah, Michael, and Alanya.  These Back-to-Back champions mastered over 100 facts about historical achievements of Black people in America – some that were well known; many that were not.  We are amazed and so proud to have such smart representatives of the Hester House!  Thank you to Coach D, Coach Treasure, parents and all that helped prepare our champs for their win.

Girl Scouts

Julia C. Hester House Youth Services is glad to announce the start of our new Girl Scout Troop.  The girls look forward to growing together and having fun doing it. Their first group task of selling Girl Scout cookies to raise money for council activities and for our Hester House troop supplies is already off to a great start.

Eleven children were awarded with gift cards to Chick-Fil-A for achieving straight A’s on their nine week report cards! Gerson, Morgan, Shirley, Armando, Alanya, Karen, Rihanna, Bre’Anna, Jameria, Leah, and Alaia are definitely star students.  We thank Mr. Steve Williams and friends so much for sponsoring these awards.  We also commend every one of our After School students that continue to work hard on homework, projects, compositions, tests, and more to improve in the classroom.
