Summer is right around the corner and we are gearing up for all of the exciting activities planned. Activities for children, like summer camp and swim lessons; activities for seniors like water aerobics and field trips; and activities for the community like ESL and nutrition classes are all scheduled for the summer.

Senior Services

The Hester House Swinging Seniors have been busy and are preparing for a great summer program. They have been actively working in the garden cultivating vegetables for healthy meals. The garden group meets on Thursdays at 9:30 am and is lead by Mr. George McAfee. Last month the Swinging Seniors participated in the “All White Cruise” which was a field trip to Galveston to watch the dolphins swim. A great time was had by all and our seniors looked amazing. The Hester House truly appreciates everything our Swinging Seniors do to make our center great.

If you’re 55+, contact Jackie Lane to join our group, (713) 274-1390.

Youth Services

Our after school program has been very busy with enrichment and academic activities to enhance the school experience for our children and youth. This school year they have taken part in robotics, read-alouds, swim lessons, field trips, like to the MLK monument, and discovery camp.

This year we also started a Girl Scout Troop who hosted a very successful cookie booth at the Hester House.

And we are proud to announce our youth being the 2nd Annual Knowledge Bowl Champs, the Knowledge Bowl is a competition with other after school programs held in February to honor Black History. Congrats to our two time Champions!

Now the program is gearing up for summer and planning some exciting activities.  The After School Spring Showcase will be held on Wednesday, May 17th at 5:00 pm.

Please contact Tia Bonham for more information at (713) 274-1389.

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of one of our seniors, Lessie Marie Clay last month. Ms. Clay was the author of the infamous Swinging Seniors anthem, “Welcome to the Hester House”.
